Birmingham Festival Theatre opens the first local production of 2013 with Steven Dietz’ Yankee Tavern this Thursday, directed by Mel Christian and featuring Joshua Butler, Trista Baker, Terry Hermes, and Brad Riegel. Check out Lou Dina’s fine production photo gallery on Facebook.

Director Emily Lunsford will hold auditions for ACTA’s Life With Father on February 25 and 26; read here for more details.

Co-directors Jonathan Fuller & Cheryl Hall have nearly finished casting for the CET/Aldridge Rep co-production of Lynn Nottage’s Ruined, opening February 28 in the Martha Moore Sykes Studio at the Virginia Samford Theatre; that cast should be finalized by the end of this week.

(For the record: we haven’t forgotten about the VST’s production of 9 to 5: the Musical opening later this month, but a cast list seems hard to come by online; feel free to email with a link or pertinent details.)

“Birmingham’s Best” poll; VST cancellations; more

It’s that time of year: head to al.com and vote in their “Birmingham’s Best of 2012” poll for your chosen local actor, actress, and theatre troupe.

This weekend’s performances of A Christmas Memory at the VST have been cancelled due to a severe illness in the cast. Please contact the VST Box Office at boxoffice@virginiasamfordtheatre.org, or call Amanda at 251.1206 for a refund or for ticket vouchers for another VST production.

‘Tis the season! Your choices for the weekend’s theatrical entertainments include:

There’s also a bumper crop of (mostly) seasonal productions opening this weekend:

  • Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity, presented by the Aldridge Repertory Theatre, plays at the historic Carver Theatre this weekend only.
  • The Park Players production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever begins its two-week run.
  • Red Mountain Theatre’s Holidaze revue kicks off a two-week run in their downtown Cabaret space. (Read the inspiring story of featured performer Davis Haines’ return to the stage here on al.com).
  • VST Productions opens their musical adaptation of Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory at the Virginia Samford Theatre.
  • South City Theatre presents Greetings!in the first weekend of its two-week run.
  • Friday night, ACTA Theatre debuts The Homecoming-not the Pinter play, but a theatrical adaptation of the holiday tale that evolved into television’s The Waltons.
  • And with something decidedly different from the rest of the holiday fare, Theatre Downtown presents Abraham Lincoln’s Big Gay Dance Party. Tomorrow’s opening night is HOBO night, which means admission is pay-what-you-can-afford.

And for those who prefer enjoying their theatre from the onstage perspective, Park Players will hold auditions for Barefoot in the Park this Saturday, and City Equity Theatre will hold combined auditions for the remainder of its Pulitzer-winning season: Ruined, by Lynn Nottage, and August: Osage County (details online and on Facebook).
